DENVER - Its been four years since the Raptors had a representative in the All-Star Game. DeMar DeRozan, a 20-year-old rookie at the time, remembers it well. "I was here when Chris Bosh was the last guy to go," said DeRozan, now 24 in his fifth NBA season, less than two hours after receiving the news. A first-time All-Star, DeRozan got the nod Thursday evening when the NBA named the Raptors guard to the Eastern Conference squad as a reserve. "I work extremely hard every off-season to try and be the best player that I can be," he said proudly. "Just to be a part of All-Star Weekend is something you dream of. I remember being a kid watching All-Star Weekend and wishing to be a part of it. To see your dreams come true definitely means a lot." DeRozan, the fourth ever Raptor selected to the midseason showcase, which will take place in New Orleans on Feb. 16, was hardly surprised to find out his selection had been made official. He had expected it. The texts from family and friends started to come in as the Raptors plane landed in Denver, shortly after the announcement had been made live on TNT. Houston Rockets All-Star guard James Harden called to congratulate him, John Wall of the Washington Wizards, also an Eastern reserve, sent a text. The first call he made was to his fiancé and his infant daughter back in Toronto. "That was cool," he said of what had to be a special moment. Its a moment, an achievement that didnt come overnight. Hes put in the work and his growth as a player, a leader and as a man reflects that. "Hes worked at it [and] he deserves it," said Dwane Casey, who has coached DeRozan in three of his five seasons. "Every year Ive been here he has improved. He has brought something new back after every summer. Im so happy and proud of him as a young man watching him grow." DeRozan, the ninth overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft, is 11th in the league in scoring, fourth in the East, and averaging career highs in points (21.8), rebounds (4.7) and assists (3.6). The Raptors iron man has missed the clubs previous two games with an ankle injury, but hes still only missed 10 contests in his career, with two full seasons under his belt. Since the trade of Rudy Gay, DeRozan has blossomed in his new role. DeRozan has recorded five or more assists in 12 of the 43 contests hes appeared in this season. He accomplished that feat 12 times all of last year and five times total in his first three seasons combined. He has already grabbed five or more rebounds 23 times this season, something he did in 19 games during the 2012-13 campaign. "Im so happy for him, man," said snubbed teammate Kyle Lowry. "It just shows the hard work that hes put in. Its great for our team, its great for the organization, its great for the city, its great for the country." Of course, the news wasnt entirely positive. Lowry, in the middle of a career season, was left off the All-Star roster. The 27-year-old point guard - widely considered to be the most notable name missing from the East team - stood in the lobby of the Raptors Denver hotel, looking ahead to his mid-Febrary vacation. He too was not surprised by the result of the voting and if he was disappointed by it, he didnt show it. "Im alright," said Lowry, averaging career-highs in points (16.8), assists (7.6) and three-point shooting (41 per cent) this season. "Ill be on a beach somewhere hanging out. Ill watch the All-Star game and cheer for (DeRozan)." Lowry is coming off of back-to-back 30-plus point games for the first time in his eight-year career, however both performances came after the coaches submitted their ballots for All-Star reserves on Sunday. Casey has spent the better part of the last month campaigning for both of his guards, hoping to get both voted in, but expecting to only get the one. Why was Lowry left out? Politics, most likely. He and DeRozan may have split votes from coaches who were only willing to vote for one Raptor. Coaches trying to get their own guy in - unable to vote for their own players, by rule - may have thrown their votes to others, less likely to make it. Then theres Lowrys reputation for being, well, prickly on occasion. However, the numbers speak for themselves, or at least they should have. Lowry leads the East in assists in January, averaging 8.3. Hes also hit more threes this month (49) than any player in the league, shooting them at a 46 per cent clip. Hes among the league-best in assist-to-turnover ratio and he has the second highest PER (player efficiency rating) of any guard in the conference. "I am disappointed for Kyle because he is playing like an All-Star," Casey said. "He is one of the best point guards in the league right now and hopefully this doesnt deter him from his continuing his journey to being the best in the league and proving people wrong." Instead, the Nets Joe Johnson made the cut. Johnson is averaging 15.7 points, his lowest mark since 2002-03, his second season in the league. Hes only the second All-Star voted in by the coaches with a below-average PER since 2003. "Im going to keep grinding no matter what, All-Star or not," Lowry said. "Im always going to work hard and continue to be the best player I can be to help my team win." "Honestly I didnt even worry about it," he continued. "We didnt get two, doesnt matter, we got one and thats a big statement for our team. [DeRozans] going to represent our team and hes going to represent us well." DeRozan joins Johnson, Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat, Wall, the Indiana Pacers Roy Hibbert, Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls and the Atlanta Hawks Paul Millsap on the East squad, along with starters LeBron James and Dwyane Wade of the Heat, Indianas Paul George, Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers Kyrie Irving. Known as an aggressive striker, Belfort (23-10) instead paced himself as the engaged in the early going and showed restraint by not overcommitting against the larger Rockhold (10-2). But when the opportunity presented itself, Belfort delivered an incredible spinning heel kick that landed flush on Rockholds chin and sent him toppling to the floor. Mike Pouncey Chargers Jersey . It led to his downfall on Tuesday. The Major League Soccer club fired Rennie after a second straight up-and-down season that saw the Whitecaps start strong before limping across the finish line. Chargers Jerseys . I wondered how NHL coaches would feel about a playoff schedule that allowed them to open a best-of-seven series on the road, which many claim to favour, yet still gave them the precious home-ice edge for a seventh game. The Toronto Blue Jays conclude the interleague portion of their schedule over the next three days, with three games in Phoenix against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D-Backs came into being in 1998 and appear destined to finish second in the AL West after the Tsunami that is the Los Angeles Dodgers swept over them. I thought it might be interesting to see what the D-backs have done over their 16 years compared to what the Blue Jays have done over their past 16 campaigns. The numbers are just this side of startling. Over the last 16 years, including 2013, the Jays cumulative record is 1278-1287. Arizona has a very slight edge at 1279-1285. So what you appear to have on the surface is two mediocre, somewhat underachieving clubs. But the year to year records and accomplishments tell a somewhat different story. Over its 16 year history, the D-Backs have finished in first place in the National League West five times. They also won the National League Championship once, and the World Series in 2001 in a classic seven game victory over the Yankees. Arizona has also finished second twice (probably a third time this year), third place three times, fourth place once and four times in fifth place. In just their second year of existence, the Diamondbacks reached 100 victories -- a total the Blue Jays have never attained. In their fourth year, they won 92 games and won a World Series quicker than any franchise in Major League history. After drawing over three million fans in three of their first five years, theyve off to where they hover around the two million mark, as they have over the past five seasons. The D-Backs have been no strangers to change. Theyve had two principle owners in Jerry Colangelo, and since 2004, Ken Kendrick. Theyve had five general managers over 15-plus season, including the current boss Kevin Towers. Theyve also had six managers; the most successful of which has been one-time Blue Jays catcher Bob Brenly, who led the D-Backs to two division titles and their lone World Series victory. To contrast, this with the Blue Jays over the past 16 years, the Jays have two ownership groups, Interbrew and Rogers, three GMs in Gord Ash, J.P Ricciardi and now Alex Anthopoulos. The Blue Jays have also had eight managers, including John Gibbons twice. Over that same 16 year span, though, the Blue Jays have finished in third place eight times, fourth place five times and fifth place twice if you count this year with four weeks to go. The bright light was in 2006, under John Gibbons, where the Jays finished in second place. Arizona also showed a propensity for the big turnaround. In 2010, they finished in last place. The following year, they jumped all the way to first place. The 29 game improvement from 2010 to 2011 is tied for third best since 1998. Its interestinng both teams have changed the name of their ballparks; Arizona went from Bank One Ballpark to now Chase Field.dddddddddddd. The Jays went from Skydome to the Rogers Centre. There are other connections between these two franchises. In the 97 expansion draft, Arizona chose right hander Marty Janzen and lefty Omar Daal from the Blue Jays. Dahl went on to throw the first shutout in D-backs history on July 30, 1998; a four-hitter against the Cubs at Bank One Ballpark. Another ex-Blue Jay, Todd Stottlemyre, picked up Arizonas first ever post-season victory on October 6, 1998. He tossed a four-hitter over six and 2/3rd innings in a 7-1 victory over the New York Mets. Two other former Jays 2nd basemen figured into hitting marks with the D-Backs. Kelly Johnson hit for the cycle against the Giants on July 23, 2010, then current second sacker Aaron Hill hit for the cycle in 11 days last season -- June 18th versus Seattle and June 29th at Milwaukee. Brooklyns Babe Herman is the only other player in the modern era to accomplish that feat, and he hit for the cycle three times in his career. An ex-Diamondback holds a couple of Blue Jays power hitting records as well. Tony Batista, who spent less than three full years in Toronto, slugged 26 homers as the shortstop and 41 homers as a third baseman -- both franchise records for those positions. Considering the overall records are nearly identical, its not easy to explain why the Diamondbacks have won five division titles in 16 years and the Blue Jays have none. Part of it is the Blue Jays are playing in the tougher American League East. But thats not even as true as it once was, with the Dodgers spending the way they are and the Giants having won two of the last three World Series. This, another one of those stats that really sticks out. Since 2008, Tampa Bay has only used 19 starting pitchers. Speaking of the Rays, theyre sitting three-and-a-half games ahead of the Yankees in the race for that second Wild Card slot in the American. The Rays have 27 more games left, one more than the Yankees. In terms of the teams they are playing, the Rays have the slightly easier schedule. However, Tampa Bay plays only 11 of those remaining 27 at home. They are currently on a western swing with seven to play, including four against the Angeles and three against Seattle. Their only three remaining games with the Yanks are in New York from September 24 through to the 26th. The Yankees, on the other hand, still have seven games left with Boston, including four at home this week. Joe Girardi and company also wind up the season with three games in Houston against the lowly Astros. The Rays, meanwhile, play their final three at Rogers Centre against the Blue Jays. Its going to be a very interesting race indeed.
